Have you ever seen hand written signs stuck in ground at intersections saying things like, “Anyone can qualify for a home loan” or in car dealerships where their ads say, “Anyone can buy a car here”?
But then you read fine print and find out “ANYONE” means, anyone who passes a credit check.
It sure seems like whenever people say, “Anyone is welcome” or “Anyone can cash in on this great deal”, they don’t really mean it do they? There’s always a catch.
So you might understand why some would be cynical when they come into a church like ours and hear a passage like the one we read last week where Jesus said to the crowds,
“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” ~Luke 9:23
Folks hear the word ANYONE. ANYONE can come. ANYONE can be a follower of Jesus and they’re like, ‘Yeah, what’s the catch? Show me the fine print? Because we’ve learned you can’t take that at face value, can we?
I’d like to look at this statement, to see exactly what Jesus is saying here and what it means for our lives today, as we seek to go from FANS to FOLLOWERS of Him.
